This is a summary and personal experience of how to apply visitor visa to South Africa for Chinese passport holders in Japan. The documents listed at the end of this blog may not be suitable for your case if you have a different one.
I applied the visitor visa at the end of Jan. 2017 to attend an academic conference in Cape Town.
Do not believe the documents list on the official website of Embassy of SA in Japan. The information online is out of date. The best way is to contact with the staff by email. You have to submit the related documents to the Embassy of SA in Tokyo, by yourself or a travel agency company. The staff at the embassy checks the submitted documents. If they find something inappropriate, they will return your documents. Since they only provide consular service in the morning (10am-1pm) of Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, you'd better prepared the qualified documents and pass the checkup at one time. A good method is to scan all the documents and email them to the staff for preliminary checkup. If the documents pass the checkup, you have to transfer the money to their account at a nearby ATM or bank and show the receipt to them. Then you can get receipt of the visa fee and they will tell you that you will be notified when the visa is ready. It is said that 14 working days are usually a normal period. Actually it took only two weeks between the submission day and receiving day. Anyway, it would be better to prepare earlier.
Finally is a list of documents needed.
- application form DHA-84.
- passport, valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit. Two unused pages when presenting the passport for the purpose of endorsing a visa. One blank page when presenting to Immigration in South Africa.
- copy of residence card, the expired date on which should be longer than the expiry day of the intended visit.
- two passport-sized photos.
- certificate of employment from belonged company, explaining the employment period, work contents, financial support for the trip, etc.
- bank statements for the latest three months.
- Travel insurance covering the duration of trip.
- e-tickets with reservation confirmation.
- invitation letter from the local.
